And even 14 years after the release of the original title, its developer Santa Monica Studio continues to push the franchise to new heights with the PS4 reboot God of War and an upcoming sequel referred to by fans as God of War 5. Technically the fourth entry in the franchise, God of War for PS4 took home the coveted Game of the Year award and breathed new life into the series with the father-and-son dynamic of Kratos and Atreus.

Since the release of God of War for PS4, Santa Monica has posted job listings that hint that a new title is in the works. The fifth entry in the God of War series not been announced, so neither Santa Monic or Sony Interactive Entertainment has revealed specific release dates. The most recent God of War release took five years to develop.

God Of War 5: Release Date And Check Out All The Latest Update

Game director Cory Barlog told Kotaku that a majority of that time was dedicated to complicated logistics like a working game engine and other labor-intensive mechanics. For a follow-up, all Santa Monica will need to do is re-optimize the engine for the PS5 and create a new story. Plus, Barlog also teased that he has tons of ideas to move the story forward. So coming up with a new plot might not be so difficult either. But it seems that Barlog has more than enough material to work with for God of War 5 and might already be cooking something up.

The position is still availablethough the line that required knowledge of God of War appears to have been removed. This suggests that the original position was filled or Santa Monica removed the snippet to avoid stirring up any rumors.

Kratos battles Baldur, the Norse god of light, one final time at the end of the game. Kratos deflects most of them, almost perfectly setting the stage for a sequel.

Plus, a secret cut scene at the end of the game shows Thor coming to confront Kratos, suggesting that something big has just been put into action. There has never been a God of War game that has released on any console other that the PlayStation.

God of War 5 has not been announced but it is anticipated to come out for the PS5… eventually. Danny Paez. The final Required Skill of the job listing drops a massive hint that the position is for a new 'God of War' game. Santa Monica Studio. We finally know when God of War will release. This time his adventure will take us towards the northern side of the globe. Cory Barlog already touched on the choice of Norse mythology. But there are others who might make an appearance.

We have no idea who his mother is so it could be a Norse Goddess or a servent of a Norse Goddess. It could be and would be awesome if Kratos and Frigg had a child in Atreus.

This would give Odin a plausible reason to hate Kratos and why the God of War needs to protect his son. If this hypothetical story plays any part in the new God of War then we might also see Baldr.

He is the son of Odin and Frigg. So if this guy finds out there is yet another bastard brother somewhere, he might turn the Norse summer sun against our bearded fighter. Even if the story about Atreus is totally different we just might see Balrd. He is known as the god of light, joy and purity. So any interaction with a peaceful god and Kratos should be an interesting one. In the first trailer we saw some kind of seamonster aiding Kratos.

If we think past the current look of that monster it might just have been Heimdallr. This god possesses the power of foreknowledge, keen eyesight and hearing. We also know that Heimdallr once fought Loki as a seal. So if he uses this same power to transform into a seamonster and decides to help Kratos, we might be up for a big surprise. These are four gods that we might see in the next God of War. But there is one event that ties all of this together. During this event a lot of the Norse gods got wiped out and there are tons of monster that fought with the gods.

God of War [PS4]. Updated Feb. Posted Feb. Developer: Santa Monica Studio. Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment. The latest God of War has been out for a few months now, and while Santa Monica Studios has no plans for post-launch content, rumors already abound that they are starting work on God of War 5.

God of War managed to tell an extremely strong story with a relatively small cast of characters; although it had fewer major boss-fights than some previous games, the core characters were more developed and interesting, on the whole. With that in mind, what are some of the characters from Norse myth would we like to see in God of War 5 as the cast begins to expand?

According to notes in Alfheim, the Light Elves are in search of him, as he has gone missing. Freyr is the twin brother of Freyja, who at the end of the latest game is set on getting revenge upon Kratos and Atreus. Freyr also owns a veritable treasure trove of magic artefacts; his magical sword Sumarbrandr was capable of swinging itself, and could make for an interesting character in its own right. In myth, Freyr lost the sword and went into Ragnarok armed with a tree branch.

Thor and Odin have clearly been confirmed for the current Norse story arc. Instead, another major Aesir who could appear in God of War 5 is Heimdallr. The watchman who guards the Bifrost bridge, the entrance to Asgard; Heimdallr could well face Kratos as a boss who he must defeat to gain access to the Aesir stronghold.

Another important aspect of Heimdallr is that he carries the Gjallarhorn, the horn which will signal the start of Ragnarok. There are plenty of gods and giants in Norse myth with great strength or power. Hodr might not number among them, but he could nonetheless be a very interesting addition to God of War 5.

This blind god is the son of Odin, and the twin brother of Baldur. In myth, Hodr was tricked into killing Baldur by Loki, who gave him a mistletoe arrow to shoot him with. Given the events of God of War, clearly that part of the myth never came to pass. As a result, Hodr is unlikely to be killed by Vali in revenge for the act, leaving him free to appear in God of War 5.

While Hodr might not be the most powerful god in the original stories, the blind god could well come after Kratos and attempt to avenge his brother. Given how the developers envisioned Baldur, Hodr could receive just as impressive a re-imagining. Like Mimir, however, his strength comes from wisdom. Kvasir was born from the saliva of the Aesir and Vanir, a mystical being who spread wisdom and knowledge wherever he traveled.

Eventually, he was killed by two dwarves who turned his blood into the Mead of Poetry, which later came into the possession of Odin. Either Kvasir, or the Mead, could be an interesting character to appear in God of War 5, especially as a counter to Mimir assisting the Aesir. Where Kvasir could well fit into the story is his involvement with Loki.God of War 5 is definitely going to happen, it's just a matter of waiting until it's officially announced.

Sony Santa Monica's God of War video game franchise is one of the PlayStation's biggest first-party franchises, something that started all the way back on the PlayStation 2 in - and it has continued in some form ever since. The latest God of War installment stepped away from Greek mythology and put the focus on Norse mythology.

And considering how critically and commercially successful 's God of War waswhich has since become a representation for the perseverance of single-player games, another sequel is all but confirmed.

god of war 5

While nothing official has been revealed, there's a lot that can be deduced from what has been revealed about the future of the God of War franchise thus far. Sony Santa Monica has not revealed God of War 5 's release date yet or even when to expect the new title.

However, series director Cory Barlog recently said that the next installment won't take another 5 years to develop like 's God of War did. That means audiences should expect to see God of War 5 hit store shelves no later than - but, hopefully, a little bit earlier.

God of War 5 will continue the story left off by the last God of War game and explore Norse mythology in greater detail, just like how the original God of War trilogy did with Greek mythology. Based on the events of the new title, it looks like Freya will be the main antagonist in God of War 5with the overall story arc adapting the events of Ragnarok - a prophesied depiction of a series of events that will bring about the end of all things and the deaths of most of the Norse gods, such as Odin, Thor, and Loki.

This may, of course, carry over to God of War 6 as the conclusion of the Norse storyline. God of War 4 wasn't exactly an open-world game in the traditional sense, but it was open, something that differed from previous installments. Considering everything that went into the new game, it makes sense that God of War 5 not only would continue down that path but also be somewhat bigger in scale. That's usually the case with sequels, after all.

According to environmental artist Nate Stephens, a potential God of War 5 would also have bigger fights. Almost two months of 's God of War game released, Stephens revealed that if Kratos were to meet with Odin or Thor, it would have to be bigger and better than what they did with this new installment.

god of war 5

Furthermore, the story itself would be much longer. Since God of War 4 was an astounding critical achievement, God of War 5 supposedly being bigger, better, and longer is everything fans could hope for. God of War 4 took the franchise into a new direction, literally branching off from Greek mythology for the first time.

god of war 5

Because of that, there are plenty of stories left to tell. And shortly after the installment hit store shelves, Sony Santa Monica creative director Cory Barlog revealed that he currently has five more games planned in his head via Kotaku. Whether or not all those installments continue the Norse theme, or even end up happening at all, remains to be seen, but it's safe to say that at least one or two will go gold one day.

The question is, when? Current reports indicate that Sony will release the PlayStation 5 by It's unclear what the rumored video game console would consist of, but it will without a doubt be more powerful than what is already out today.

Plus, given that is only three years away, God of War 5 will more than likely release on the PlayStation 5, though it's also possible that it might be one of the last major first-party games to release on the PlayStation 4 as well.

However, developing God of War 5 for the PlayStation 5 isn't something that Barlog is looking forward to, if a sequel happens. To him, as a developer, it's time-consuming and understandably tedious to overhaul a game engine for a new platform, even if that platform comes from within the same company. And, since Barlog said the next game won't take another half-decade to develop, it stands to reason that God of War 5 may have a release schedule similar to the original God of War game as well as Naughty Dog's The Last of Us.

Since God of War 5 hasn't been officially announced or confirmed to be in development, there isn't a trailer just yet - and there likely won't be a trailer for another few years. Atreus Takes Over Franchise? To start with, the sequel is likely to see Kratos and his son, Atreus going up against the murderous Thor. It was revealed in the previous game that his name was originally Loki and this puts his role in the right context with regards to the Norse gods. In the myths, he is also supposed to be the father of the world serpent, so that presents some interesting dilemmas.

Then again, the franchise has had no problems changing up more details in the past, so the finer points might not exactly be in tandem with Norse mythology. This character has already died several times before, but this death could be permanent. Why Japanese yen is still one of the safest places to park your money in a market crash.
